- April 2026 Message -
My darling students and families,
Greetings from Japan!
I am happily settled here visiting my daughter, currently sitting on my “bed” on the floor in a room with paper walls—see pictures!—And oh what a delight it is. It feels like stepping into a watercolor painting… the sakura (cherry blossoms) are in full bloom, drifting through the air like pink snow, and I am soaking in every bit of the culture, beauty, and inspiration. Consider this a very important educational expedition—for both your teacher and your music!
While I am away (March 30 – April 10), we are officially in Independent Study Mode—and I expect brilliance.
PRIZES AWAIT!
I will be bringing back a special gift from Japan for the students with the highest total practice minutes in each category:
- Piano Girl
- Piano or vocal Boy
- Vocalist (Under 12)
- Vocalist (Over 12)
Remember—practice minutes include:
- Piano students: Ode to Joy, assigned songs, theory, learning a new song you love (yes, even YouTube-pieces!)
- Vocalists: writing lyrics to ode to Joy, any singing but also listening to classical vocal music (like opera- Puccini, here we come!), working out with Cheryl, and singing your chosen pieces.
Assignment Reminder:
ALL vocalists must record themselves singing “Danny Boy” and send it to me (text or YouTube link). I will be listening from Japan but more importantly I want you to listen and think about changes you want to make.
Mystery Duet Party – April 24 7pm
- You will draw a partner from a hat
- Perform a duet of Ode to Joy
- Pianists: play at tempo!!
- Vocalists: sing your OWN lyrics (ode to anything you love!)
Here is a very pink and slightly ridiculous example for you…
Ode to Sakura (to the tune of Ode to Joy):
Pink confetti, petals falling,
Landing softly in my hair,
Is this magic? Is this frosting?
Floating lightly through the air?
Cherry blossoms everywhere now,
Nature’s cotton candy dream,
I would gladly live in pink land,
With my friends and some ice cream
Petals drifting, people staring,
Everyone just stops and sighs,
Even pigeons look more fancy,
Underneath these blossom skies!
If I could, I’d bring a suitcase
Stuffed with blossoms just for you…
Though I think the airline people
Might not love that plan…Boo hoo.

Hollywood Recital – Saturday May 9: choose 10:30am or 1 PM
Lights, camera, ACTION! Our glamorous Hollywood-themed recital is approaching. Be practicing your movie music and preparing to shine like the stars you are. (See attached flyer for details!)
Cherry Festival Pop Show – June 20 at 11 AM
This is our BIGGEST show of the year for vocals. Start thinking of upbeat, joyful pop songs. And mark your calendars carefully—this is not one to miss!
Boise Music Festival – June 27
We have been invited back again—how flattering! More details to come, but I am thrilled for this opportunity.
---
My dear ones, I miss you already—but I cannot wait to return inspired, refreshed, and perhaps slightly covered in cherry blossom petals.
Practice beautifully. Dream boldly. And please, reach out to me with any questions at all—I am never far away.
With love from Japan and a heart full of music,
Miss Holly
P.S. Don’t forget to record your practice minutes… I am keeping track
